The missus and I bought our house little over a year ago. It’s our first. We always knew we wanted a house, but knowing what you want and getting it are two separate things. It took us 6 years to get it. Paying off credit card debt, enduring job losses, saving our money, finding the right house, and finally – diving in. It took awhile, but we here. It may not be much, but it ours.
The house we moved in to was a rough shape. The bones were in good shape, but everything else had fallen into disrepair. Worn floors, pock-marked walls, broken tiles, drafty windows. What we saw, though, was a place that we could make our own. The mid-century kitchen fixtures, the original brickwork, the turn-of-the-century woodwork, the modest backyard. In this house, we saw ourselves.
It’ll take us years to fully realize this house. The electric panel needs to be updated, the roof needs replacing, the porch sags, the garage floor could use a resurfacing. In the meantime we’ll keep working at it.
It’s been nearly 4 years since I had a web site for myself. In the intervening years I had built dozens, but none of them felt right. I was a dog chasing my own tail; dissatisfaction was the result. I started assembling this site in early July. It came together quickly. It felt right – just like when we found our house. It was time to dive in.
What will this site ultimately resemble? I have an idea. I’ll have comments enabled within the month, a link to my Flickr account, a Skype number. That’s just icing, though. I want my site to be a place to show nice stuff. It’s getting there/it’ll get there. Until then I’ll keep working.
